1990 Divorce Addendum to the "Technical Appendix" of Vital Statistics of the United States, 1988, Volume III--Marriage and Divorce REGISTRATION AREAS Divorces granted in the divorce-registration area (DRA) accounted for 49 percent of all divorces in the United States in 1990. STANDARD CERTIFICATES A third revision of the standard certificate was recommended to the States for use beginning January 1, 1989. On the divorce certificate, the item requesting the number of children born alive of this marriage was deleted; the item requesting the number of children under 18 in this family was changed to the number of children under 18 in this household as of the date the couple last resided in the same household; and an item was added requesting the number of children under 18 whose physical custody was awarded to: husband, wife, joint, or other. In early 1989, most States implemented revised certificates that closely resembled the standard. However, some States continued to use previous versions or they revised their certificates but left out items included on the standard. In 1990, all DRA States reported the State of residence of the husband and wife, the date of the divorce and marriage, and the number of children under 18 in this household (or comparable information). For the remaining items, see table A for a listing of the States which reported each item. In 1990, NCHS did not use to use the following items on the divorce certificate: date couple separated, petitioner, education of husband/wife, and if previously married, how many ended by death/divorce. SAMPLING PROCEDURES About 22 percent of all divorces in the DRA were in the divorce sample for 1990. See table B for the sample number, sampling rate, and weighted estimate for every DRA State. div90ad.txt - pg. 1 States Reporting Certain Items on Divorce Certificates, 1990 ______________________________________________________________________________ | | | Custody |Number of | | Date of | Age | of |Marriage | Race of | Birth of | of | Children |for | Husband/ Area |Husband/Wife|Husband/Wife| Under 18 |Husband/Wife| Wife __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Alabama | X | X | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Alaska | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Connecticut | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Delaware | X | | | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ District of | | | | | Columbia | X | | | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Georgia | X | | | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Hawaii | X | | | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Idaho | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Illinois | X | X | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Iowa | X | | | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Kansas | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Kentucky | | X | | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Maryland | | X | | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Massachusetts | X | | | X | __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Michigan | X | | X | X | __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Missouri | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Montana | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Nebraska | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ New Hampshire | X | X | X | X | __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ New York | X | | | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Ohio | X | X | | X | __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ div90ad.txt - pg. 2 States Reporting Certain Items on Divorce Certificates, 1990 ______________________________________________________________________________ | | | Custody |Number of | | Date of | Age | of |Marriage | Race of | Birth of | of | Children |for | Husband/ Area |Husband/Wife|Husband/Wife| Under 18 |Husband/Wife| Wife __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Oregon | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Pennsylvania | X | X | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Rhode Island | X | X | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ South Carolina | X | | | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ South Dakota | | X | | | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Tennessee | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Utah | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Vermont | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Virginia | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Wisconsin | X | | | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Wyoming | X | | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ Virgin Islands | X | X | X | X | X __________________|____________|____________|__________|____________|_________ div90ad.txt - pg. 3 RECORDS IN THE SAMPLE, RECORD WEIGHT, AND ESTIMATED NUMBER OF EVENTS, DIVORCE REGISTRATION AREA AND EACH REGISTRATION STATE, 1990 NUMBER OF SAMPLE ESTIMATED NUMBER AREA RECORDS WEIGHT OF EVENTS 1/ DRA TOTAL 2/ 127,004 ... 580,111 ALABAMA--------------- 5,154 5 25,770 ALASKA---------------- 3,161 1 3,161 CONNECTICUT----------- 5,165 2 10,330 DELAWARE-------------- 3,034 1 3,034 DIST.
